Mark Charles Gustafson of West Hartford died unexpectedly on August 28th at age 66. He was a beloved husband, father, brother, grandfather and friend.
Born in Ashtabula, OH on November 14th, 1959 to parents Laurena (Fraser) Kihlstrom and Charles “Chuck” Gustafson, Mark was the second of four children; Craig Gustafson (Blake), Brian Gustafson and Holly Bensen (Dwaine). He cherished his early memories there, fishing with his father and brothers, snowmobiling through the woods with friends, playing with dogs, and even befriending a pet crow named ‘Waldo’ who made it into the local paper more than once.
He graduated in 1982 with a Bachelor of Science in Communications from Ohio University where he met his wife of 41 years, Martha Wright Gustafson. Together, they eventually settled down in West Hartford, CT where they raised their three children, Mark Alexander “Alex” Gustafson (38, Dana Point, CA), Molly Gustafson Barstow (34, Boulder, CO) and Kathryn Jane Gustafson (31, Portland, OR). Mark was an amazing father and his children felt his love constantly, through every chapter. He was also a beloved father-in-law to Kristyn Roth Gustafson (Alex’s wife) and Samuel Barstow (Molly’s husband).
Mark owned his own business, selling and installing sound masking all over New England and the Tri-State Area. He didn’t mind the long drives or late nights, and made friends wherever he roamed. Outside of work, he loved animals and owned many dogs over the course of his life. Fly fishing and walks through the woods brought him peace. He had a remarkable gift for connecting with people and valued time with family and close friends. Whether it was golfing, traveling, watching movies or hosting a big party around his grill, he cherished the simple joy of being together – cracking jokes, sharing stories, and enjoying good food. He had a knack for hospitality, making everyone feel welcome and cared for.
Mark will be remembered for his warmth, his generosity, his playful sense of humor, and his childlike sense of curiosity. He lived a life that was full of love and inspiration, and he was always grateful for what he had.
Mark thrived as a grandfather and treasured every moment with his four granddaughters, Avery (5) and Blair (3) Gustafson and Isla (3.5) and Laurena (1.5) Barstow.
